    Why should I hire you?

  2. John

Because you get a director who still ships. I run technology at Rapha, the premium cycling apparel brand, and the remit is broad for the title: engineering, cloud and DevOps, QA, business analysis, product, ERP and business systems, end-user IT, security, vendor management and the technology budget. I came up as an engineer and I have stayed in the detail. While holding that remit I have personally written and deployed production code, built AI agents and run releases.

Plenty of people say they are hands-on. What makes your version different?

  4. John

It is not a hobby I keep up on the side. Staying in the detail is how I understand the business well enough to support it properly. The deepest areas are composable and headless commerce, where I led a full replatform, and event-driven and domain-driven design, where I designed the middleware layer myself. Add AWS serverless, Next.js and TypeScript at both ends, the data platform on GCP and BigQuery, and a multi-year AI programme with multiple agents and workflows in production. That is current work, not something I remember doing.

And the commercial side? Most engineers struggle there.

  6. John

I sit on the leadership side of the business, so I have had to get good at it. Cost, forecast and return are part of the technical argument, not an appendix to it. A wide remit means I prioritise hard, and I am comfortable saying "good enough" is the right answer when it is. If that sounds like the mix you need, email me at me@jjkilpatrick.ai and we can talk specifics.
